SKIN REJUVENATION
TREATMENT

AGEING & SUN-EXPOSED SKIN

Skin changes can be related to many environmental, genetic and nutritional factors. The biggest single factor though is sun exposure. With ageing, the outer most skin layer (epidermis) thins and the number of pigment containing cells (melanocytes) decreases, with those melanocytes that remain increasing in size. The result is thinner, paler and clear skin with pigmented spots in sun exposed areas.

Exposure to sun accelerates the aging process of the skin, resulting in:

  • Vascular problems such as telangiectasias or diffuse redness

  • Irregular pigmentation (freckles or age-spots)

  • Irregular pore size

IPL - SKIN REJUVENATION TREATMENT (inc. Pigmented Lesions, Vascular Lesions)

IPL skin rejuvenation is a non-surgical procedure that can be used to treat:

  • Ageing skin

  • Fine lines, sun damage, vascular and pigment blemishes

It works by heating he superficial and deeper skin dermal structures while simultaneously cooling the superficial skin. This stimulates the repair process causing the body to create new collagen and elastin.

Its advantages include:

  • Removal of superficial vascular/pigmented blemishes

  • Stimulation of mediators/fibroblasts leading to collagen remodelling

  • Direct stimulation of collagen with some tightening plus some generation of new collagen and elastin fibres.

ACTIVE ACNE TREATMENT

This treatment modality can also be used to treat active acne. In active acne the normal hair follicle and sebaceous gland become blocked and the mixture of hair protein, oil, fatty acids and bacteria presence cause inflammation and potentially scarring.

IPL has been shown to help treat active acne by killing these bacteria under the skin and reducing inflammation. It will not completely remove scars from previous acne infection but through the skin remodelling process detailed above may make them less visible.

ROSACEA TREATMENT

Rosacea is a poorly understood but relatively common long term skin condition that mainly affects the face. It can be controlled to some degree with long term medication but the changes in a person's physical appearance can have a significant psychological impact.

Symptoms of rosacea include:

  • Episodes of flushing (skin turns red for short while)

  • Burning and stinging sensation

  • Permanent redness

  • Spots

  • Small blood vessels in skin become visible

There is no cure currently for rosacea but IPL may be helpful by involving beams of light being aimed at the visible blood vessels in the skin to shrink them and make them less visible.
